BYERS DAY

Whilst we await Glazer's next move it is worth recalling the day that United fans added a fourth 'trophy' to the tally of 98-99 season.

As Red Issue reported in 1998/99 Murdoch had spent months cuddling up to DTI secretary Peter Mandelson, private dinner parties and lengthy discussions on mutually beneficial earners for Murdoch's empire and Mandelson's Labour Government. Then bang. It all turned sour when Mandy's greed for a luxury lifestyle got the better of him, he was forced to resign and Stephen Byers replaced him at the Board of Trade.

Murdoch had lost his placeman and with no time to sweet talk Byers, the fans' campaign led by IMUSA and SUAM stole an early lead in the political battle which Sky's spin monkeys never really recovered from. Martin Edwards dismissed those opposed to the Sky bid as 'a tiny minority' yet it is hard to find anyone now who thinks Murdoch would have been of benefit to United.

The Treble was secured and the rest is history. The world's most powerful media mogul was sent packing and fans were able to hang on to hopes and dreams that one day we could have a club which cared for its fans as much as the fans cared for it.

Six years on from the defeat of Murdoch and we are mired in a long drawn out battle to save our club from another megalomaniac. The fans' campaign this last twelve months has kept the Glazer threat at bay and may yet stop him completely. Edwards has retired to his own private toilet block under the stands yet the plc board maintains the same disdainful view of the supporters who have kept them in their jobs.

The ticket price hikes announced this week have once more shown the board's utter contempt for the fans, they have no concept of what is needed to run a 'football club' to them Manchester United is merely a business to be milked for fat salaries and profitable share option schemes.

Once Glazer is out of the way the heat needs to be turned onto the expensively upholstered arses that occupy the Old Trafford boardroom, until then we need to remain on our guard as IMUSA's Mark Longden told Red Issue this morning:

'As we approach the sixth anniversary of the defeat of Murdoch IMUSA urges all United fans to remain vigilant so that in six years time we can be having a double celebration; twelve years since the defeat of Murdoch and six years since seeing off Glazer.'
