BUT HE HATES BIG JACK

Roy was sent home from this years World Cup for his comments about
Irelands unprofessional approach but it's a surprising he kept quiet for eight
years. More from that book:

"To describe his players as pawns on a chessboard would be unfair ...to
chess. If the game Charlton insisted on playing could be compared to
anything, I'd say it'd be draughts."

"We were ill-prepared, unprofessional—and we'd boast about it! There was
more than a touch of Carry On To The World Cup Finals about the camp."
Charlton the genius:

"The Charlton myth suggests he was a genius who transformed the fortunes
of 'the Irish'—an expression I felt he used frequently to give the impression
that 'the Irish' were little people who had learned all they knew about football
from him.

"The risk of incurring his rage by trying something original was ever present.
Outstanding players like Liam Brady and Ronnie Whelan had already seen
their careers terminated for doing so. David O'Leary was another
casualty...and as a result David has always viewed Charlton much as I did, as
a joke."

After having to take a compulsory drugs test at the 94 World Cup Keane
returned to the dressing room to find that
"The Irish party had gone without me. I stood outside the stadium trying to
hitch a lift to our hotel. Thanks, Jack."
