BUNG INQUIRY WAITS ON BBC

A BBC Panorama investigation into football's bung culture was encouraged to hand evidence of wrongdoing to the Premier League inquiry two months ago, but was either unwilling or unable to provide any relevant information.

Panorama have been working on the sting operation in which agents and managers, including Portsmouth's Harry Redknapp, were tricked into discussing investing in an international sports agency, since last November.

In July programme makers approached the Premier League, who directed them to Lord Stevens, the former Met Police commissioner employed to examine almost 400 Premier League transfers. It is understood, however, that no information was passed to Lord Stevens' team.

Selective leaks of the Panorama programme suggest that one agent, Peter Harrison, discussed a number of alleged deals in which bungs were involved. Other high-profile figures said to have been caught in the sting - Bolton manager Sam Allardyce's agent son Craig and Sven-Goran Eriksson's agent Athole Still - are thought to have received letters from Panorama inviting them to comment.

There is no suggestion at this stage that anyone is guilty of any wrongdoing. The programme is scheduled to be broadcast next Monday but its content is yet to be decided.
