Bruno Fernandes has tipped departing Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick to become a "top coach" in the future.
Carrick - who was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backroom staff before being temporarily elevated to the top position - announced he would be leaving Old Trafford following his side's 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Thursday.
The result meant Carrick departed the club with an unbeaten record in the dugout, securing a Champions League victory over Villarreal and a draw with Chelsea in his previous two outings.
Speaking after the Arsenal win, Fernandes was full of praise for the caretaker boss - even if he did drop him for his first game in charge against the Yellow Submarine.
"I was really mad at him [Michael Carrick] in Villarreal but that’s the life of a coach. I see a great future for him as a coach. He knows how to speak to players. If he gets a chance he can be a top coach," he said.
Fernandes grabbed his side's first goal against Arsenal but passed up the opportunity to score another, as he allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to take United's winning penalty 20 minutes from time.
The midfielder explained this decision at full-time, saying: "We didn’t have a chat. I missed the last one so I trust him in the same way I trust myself.
"It was time for Cristiano to take the penalty because I took the last one and missed it. It doesn’t matter who gets on the penalty."
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick will finally take to the dugout for United's next game against Crystal Palace on Sunday and Fernandes revealed that the entire squad is excited to work with the German.
"Everyone has the chance to get a position. Everyone has to work hard to get the chance to be in the first XI. We will meet him tomorrow and start working on the next game."
