BITS AND BOBS

* The Mail on Sunday:

Manchester United have made a sensational bid to sign Carlos Tevez, the striker whose controversial move to West Ham cost the east London club a record £5.5 million fine for breaking transfer regulations.

Discussions have taken place between high-ranking Old Trafford officials and connections of Tevez, 23. Hijacking the brilliant Argentina forward from under the nose of north-west rivals Liverpool would eclipse even United's recent £50m splash for Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson.

The deal, initially thought to be on a loan basis for at least a season,would depend on removing the complications which surrounded Tevez's arrival at Upton Park last August from Brazilian club Corinthians.

Tevez's registration is currently held by West Ham, with whom he signed a four-year deal.

Technically that agreement still exists but the repercussions of the tribunal could mean Tevez is no longer bound by it and is, therefore, available on a free transfer.

The player's future will be thrashed out at a meeting this week between his lawyer, Graham Shears, and West Ham's legal team.

Kia Joorabchian, the Iranian born British businessman whose company, MSI, own the economic rights to Tevez's transfer, has yet to meet West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson and is currently in Buenos Aires on business with the striker, who is preparing to play for Argentina in the Copa America.

But Joorabchian has appointed Shears to negotiate on his company's behalf after a planned meeting with Magnusson was cancelled last week. MSI will demand that West Ham reinstate the now-notorious clauses in Tevez's contract which give the company rights over the striker's transfer.

* Steve Bates in the People:

Manchester United were last night closing in on a spectacular deal to land West Ham star Carlos Tevez.

I understand Old Trafford chief executive David Gill, prompted by boss Sir Alex Ferguson, is working to unravel the complicated issue of the player's ownership - which cost the Hammers a record £5.5million Premier League fine - and he believes a £12m deal could be done inside a week.

Tevez has refused to commit his long-term future to West Ham, despite almost single-handedly keeping the Hammers up last season.

* Larry White takes a coaching job at Bordeaux:

A statement on the club's official website said:

"FC Bordeaux are pleased to announce the signing of Laurent Blanc to the position of coach at the club. It will be a first experience as a coach for the former France international, world champion and European champion with Les Bleus in 1998 and 2000. Laurent Blanc signed a two-year contract and will be accompanied by Jean-Louis Gasset. The latter will occupy the post of assistant trainer and has also signed a two-year contract. The club welcomes Laurent Blanc and wishes him every possible success."

* The Sunday Express headline their sport's section with United moving for Dimitar Berbatov:

Sir Alex Ferguson has been given the green light to continue his summer spending spree and bring in a top-line striker, with with Spurs' Dimitar Berbatov his main target.

As well as Berbatov, Ferguson has already been linked with Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka and Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres.

With a question mark hanging over the fitness of Louis Saha and veteran Ole Gunnar Solskjaer undergoing another knee operation, he knows he needs more support for Wayne Rooney.

Gill said: "We've looked at it and if something comes along in another area, which is a striker, we'll see what happens.

"We're not desperate but if any top player came along and Alex and the team felt they would strengthen the side then we would move for them. If anything does happen it will be in the striking department."

* More Heinze quotes:

"My head is with the Argentina team for who play the Copa America. After that tournament I will make decisions about my career.

"Barcelona is a superclub, like Manchester United. If a formal offer is tabled I'll need to study it calmly.

"Nobody at United has told me I'm not wanted next season. I know the rumours of transfer offers have appeared, but that's not a problem for me.

"I have just enjoyed one of the best years in my career. We have played sensationally - although it was a pain to fail in the Champions League semifinal against Milan."

* The Telegraph about Rossi (who is playing in the U-21 tournament):

The striker had a very successful stint on loan at Parma last season and is desperate for regular first-team action.

And while Ferguson has made no secret of the fact he considers Rossi one of the best finishers at Old Trafford, he is unlikely to see the 20-year-old as one of his frontline forwards.

Rossi has been linked with a loan move to FC Porto and his agent Federico Pastorello said: "Giuseppe will go and play in Holland and we will then assess things when he returns.

"Obviously I have read such things in the newspapers, but we have not talked with Porto or any club.

"We are not thinking about that at the moment, Giuseppe did very well with Parma and he is now going to play for Italy. Things will be discussed at United in July."

* Reserves Phil Marsh, Jamie Mullan, Danny Rose, Lee Crockett, Aaron Burns and Floribert Ngalula have all been released by United.

* New Bradford boss Stuart McCall indulges in a little sycophancy:

"I've just been on this management course at Warwick University where we read this quote from Sir Alex Ferguson. He's a god as a manager in my eyes, and he said: 'Give me a player with technical ability and another with character and I'll take the one with character every day.' That sums it up perfectly for me.

"My staff can hopefully develop talent and technique and help build up physical and mental attributes but we can't give you that desire and ambition - that comes within."

* Sunday People about Arsenal:

Arsene Wenger is cutting short his summer holiday to sort out Arsenal's crisis.

Wenger is still furious at the departure of David Dein and the fact that he has not been replaced. And he is alarmed by the increasing unrest amongst his top stars.

At the moment Wenger is so exasperated that he will not yet contemplate extending his own contract, which has one year left to run.

* The People:

Manchester United are deciding whether they should sue the organisers of their Far East trip next month.

The club have learned they will lose around £1million for the cancellation of their final tour game in Malaysia.

United had been guaranteed around £4m for their four-match tour, which should have taken in Tokyo, Seoul, Macau in China and Kuala Lumpur.

But after being forced by Fifa to cancel the final match in Kuala Lumpur due to a clash with the Asia Cup, United have been told they won't get the full amount promised.
