In a statement, Ferguson said: "I'm extremely appreciative of the swift but thorough way the police dealt with the matter.

"I've not committed any offence and the allegations against me are spurious and without foundation. I thank all those who believed in my innocence."

"I want to make it clear that this matter will not deter Manchester United or myself from concluding the business for which we came to South Africa, namely to build bridges between South African football academies and United."

The ludicrously named prosecutor responsible for investigating the allegations has branded the claims "ridiculous".

"A prosecution in this matter, which has wasted everyone's time, would be ridiculous," explained Rodney de Cock, the deputy director of public prosecutions.

He later hinted that charges could be brought against the woman who made the claims.
