BFR PRAISE FOR GIGGS

From The Guardian:

‘He was a constant thorn in Charlton's side during the second half and I know Sir Alex Ferguson likes to see him roaming about. But I feel United would get a better return from him on a consistent basis if he spent more time as an orthodox left winger.

The cross Giggs produced for United's equaliser was the first quality ball I've seen him play from the left-hand side for some time. These days he has such a licence that he doesn't occupy that position half as much as he did a few years ago.

People think of Giggs as a left winger but he's allowed to get all over the field. There's a feeling at Old Trafford that he's better given that freedom, and on Saturday he went on to score United's second and set up their third with a cross from the right.

Giggs relishes that role and I'm not suggesting he should be tied to the left flank. I just feel a bit more variation would be great. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Solskjaer would benefit an awful lot from him stretching people wide, more like he used to, and crossing.

In the first half Giggs didn't look to go wide and that made life easier for Charlton. Whereas a couple of years ago he would have been looking to sprint down the flank to pick up a flick from one of the strikers, now 90% of his runs are driving infield. He's hoping to take things on or play little link-up passes with Van Nistelrooy or maybe Paul Scholes.

The value of Giggs going wide for a counter-attack in a similar scenario was shown on the equaliser. He stayed on the outside, gambled on the flick from Solskjaer and burst clear to cross for Scholes.

That's the sort of ball I'd expect from him more often. Defences get stretched more when he's in those areas and a cross fizzed over like that is one of the most dangerous to deal with.
