Berbatov scored a beauty of a goal to ensure United lifted the shield as the game drew to a close.
With just minutes remaining he latched onto a ball and half volleyed over the advancing Chelsea keeper and was mobbed by his jubilant team mates.
But a modest Berbatov told Sky Sports 1: "It's my first goal in the Community Shield, so it's a good day for me.
"It's always good to score against a good side like Chelsea. "
He continued: "A goal is a goal, it doesn't matter how you score it. If the ball is in the net, that's what counts."
