"He said to her there was no point carrying on playing after his poor performance.
"But Victoria was amazing. She led him back to their hotel suite and had a heart-to-heart with him.Thankfully she managed to change his mind.
"David is very stubborn when he makes a decision and he just felt so depressed he couldn't see any way out.
"Victoria has been a tower of strength. She told him he'd been through worse when he was sent off against Argentina at the World Cup in 1998.
"She said 'David, you are the England captain and I'm proud of you. You go back out there and show people what you are made of'."
