Fabian Barthez has been banned for three months for spitting at a Moroccan referee while playing for Marseille.
"He didn't spit in his face but he certainly did spit at the official," said French Federation disciplinary committee chairman Jean Mazzella.
He could have been banned for up to a year as video evidence of him spitting on the official was used in the case against him.
