The Guardian reports:
ARE YOU WATCHING LEEDS AND CITY?
‘Monaco, who finished second in the French league, were
relegated to the second division on financial grounds
yesterday, a move which will alert Premiership clubs hoping
to pick up some of their players.
‘Monaco, who obtained direct qualification into the
Champions League thanks to their fine league campaign, have
debts estimated at £38m-£63m.
‘The league's financial committee met Monaco officials last
week hoping for financial guarantees but apparently failed
to obtain them. Monaco, who finished behind only Lyon, have
six days to appeal.
‘According to the sports daily L'Equipe, Monaco would need
to find about £18m to avoid demotion because their
participation in the Champions League will realise much
needed funds.'
