"He was 34 when I let him go, and I thought he might only have another two or three years left. We were only offering him a one-year contract, but he got such a fantastic three-year deal from Spurs I told him it would be stupid not to take it.

"He is lucky that he is naturally lean.

"He is like his father in that he is a tall, angular man who doesn't carry an ounce of fat.

"But Teddy never relied on his pace, anyway. He was always economical with his running, but he became a great player because of the way he positioned himself on the pitch.

"He also has a great intellegence about him - and that's why I think he will make a good manager one day.

"Teddy thinks about the game and Alan Pardew deserves a lot of credit for knowing that he can still do a job for West Ham even at the age he is."
