ABSURD RIO

In case anyone following the Rio Ferdinand saga fears dyslexia is setting in and they're mis-reading the words before them, let me reassure you with the salient facts.

When Manchester United paid a record fee for him three years ago they were the best club in England. Today they are third best. Having won nothing in the past two years but an FA Cup. Against Millwall. Back then he was England's best centre-half after a fully-fit Sol Campbell. Now that's John Terry.

When he foolishly ignored a drugs test, he was banned for eight months, plunging his club into turmoil. But they refused to criticise him, paying him £2,444,000 in wages while he did nothing.

Despite all this, United are offering him a £30,000-a-week pay rise, putting him on £100,000 a week, which makes him the highest-paid player in the club's history, even though he's no Bobby Charlton or George Best.

Just a quicker Steve Bruce minus an ability to score goals, whose concentration levels go AWOL in big matches.

But this offer it seems is an insult because he can't afford to give his agent a cut out of it. So he wants another £20,000 a week.

How wise are those ex-Stretford Enders who turn up today to support the breakaway FC United? How much cleaner will their nostrils feel for not getting within smelling distance of this absurd young man and the people who tolerate him?’
