Manchester United have entered negotiations to sign Ronaldinho, the Brazil forward, in an extraordinary cut-price transfer deal that could cost as little as £10 million. Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to exploit the financial uncertainty at Paris Saint-Germain by seeing off competition from AC Milan for the 23-year-old, who is best known for scoring the goal that eliminated England from last summer’s World Cup finals.
Significantly, he is also one of the foremost clients of Nike, having fronted their recent worldwide television advertising campaign. Nike, the American sportswear company, has invested heavily to become the official kit supplier of United and Brazil, although the extent of its involvement in what would effectively be a marriage between three of its main clients is not yet clear.
